Individual Counselling
Safe one-on-one sessions to explore who you are and how you can create new possibilities
Trauma Informed Care
A confidential space is created for every client to feel heard, to heal and to progress.
Individual counselling provides one-to-one professional support for adults who may be experiencing emotional distress, difficult life transitions, relationship challenges, grief, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, unresolved experiences or negative patterns of thinking and behaviour that are affecting their wellbeing.
At D.E.A.R Wellness Centre, counselling would not simply focus on "what is wrong." The process considers the person's experiences, environment, relationships, strengths, coping strategies and goals. The aim is to help clients understand themselves more fully, develop healthier ways of coping and make meaningful changes in their lives.
Approaches that may be incorporated:
Trauma informed practice: Prioritizes safety, trust and healing from trauma.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Changes unhelpful thoughts and behaviours.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy: Builds skills to manage emotions and distress.
Motivational Interviewing: Strengthens motivation for positive change.
Strengths-based practice: Builds on strengths, ability and resilience.
Crisis Intervention: Provides immediate support, safety and stabilisation.
When Is It Best To Seek Therapy?
Counselling may be helpful when emotional difficulties begin affecting your relationships, work, sleep, concentration, physical wellbeing or your ability to enjoy everyday life. You do not need to wait until you are in crisis to seek help.
If you are experiencing stress, grief, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, emotional challenges, or life changes, counselling can help you find clarity, healing, and a path forward.
Some people avoid treatment because:
- Stigma surrounding mental health
- Fear of being judged
- Concerns about confidentiality
- Uncertainty of what counselling involves
- Cultural expectations about handling problems privately
- Financial challenges
- Fear of confronting painful experiences
- Believing that asking for help represents weakness
The Trinidad and Tobago 2024 STEPS Survey, conducted by the Ministry of Health using the WHO STEPS methodology, found that 13.6% of adults aged 18-69 experienced symptoms of depression during the previous 12 months. The figure was 17.3% among women and 9.9% among men. The results were weighted to represent Trinidad and Tobago's adult population.
As a trained social worker, I can help you make lifestyle changes, identify underlying causes of symptoms and provide strategies for changing unwanted thoughts and behaviours.
